Q & A WITH SAM FROM ALTON

Sam Owner of Alton

  1. How did you start your business? I started the business in 2015. In 2018, I was committed full-time.

  2. What inspired you to start your business? I hated my job at the time (I was an accountant). I loved the outdoors and decided to get into the business of selling high-end outdoor goods.

  3. If you could speak to your younger self, just starting, what advice would you give him? Do something that you love. Also, something that inspires you and others.

  4. Why did you decide to become a business owner? I wanted to be my boss. Also, I was passionate about the outdoors and providing high-quality outdoor goods to our customers.

  5. How did you come up with the name of your business? The name came from a National Park in Western QLD named Alton National Park.

  6. Who are your primary competitors? I don’t have any direct competitors as the products I have are high end outdoor wear and equipment.

  7.  How long have you been in business? I have been in business for nearly ten years.

  8. What do you think is the significant challenge facing small businesses today? It would be being able to maintain a healthy cash flow.

  12. What book should every business owner read? Shoe dog (Nike)

  13. What is your favourite thing about being a business owner?  I love being my own boss and having ownership.

  14. Biggest regret, if any? Every business owner has at least one. I really wish I had pushed harder earlier on. When I started out, there was less competition.

  15. What’s the dream? What’s the end goal?  Alton to have a multi-national presence.

  16. How do you balance work/life? Making sure I have an organised schedule.
